What is the perfect backyard setting for your home? Are you planning a remodeling project? Do you want to turn that pile of dirt into a real outdoor room? There are some things to consider before you bring in the heavy machinery. Think about how you entertain, the style of home you have and how you live your life.

Begin with the 'toys' you want to incorporate into the plan. Are you going to install an inground or above ground pool? Do you want to sit in a hot tub after you get out of the pool and have it be part of the plan? A Jacuzzi hot tub is fun to sit in at a party even if you don't have a swimming pool. You can have a great backyard with either if the budget is tight. Are you going to install one of the new infrared saunas outdoors, or do you want to have it be inside the home? Saunas are a healthy means of ridding your body of toxins and losing weight at the same time.

Once you have decided on the toys, now you can decorate and accessorize the patio. Is your home a French Tudor or full log? Do you have a Victorian mansion or a lake cottage? Do you entertain formally or do you love casual living? Patio furniture comes in every style imaginable, just make sure it complements the style of your home. I wouldn't put white wicker furniture on the patio of a full log home and heavy wooden Adirondack chairs may not look great near a Victorian. Much of determining a decorating theme is common sense. For casual living, the right furniture may be cast aluminum or resin near a pool. Definitely include a hammock with any of the styles of furniture. If you don't have trees to accommodate the hammock, get a stand and sit it near the pool for lounging in the sun and watching the kids play in the water. Place it anywhere because lying in the hammock is one of the most comfortable ways of spending an afternoon. If you entertain a lot, and it's in the budget, an outdoor kitchen with full appliances and bar might be just the thing to add. Think about how you will use your backyard and then get to work in making it the extended outdoor room you will use everyday.
